NOVEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER

The No Excuse Holiday Season

November begins the time of year when we throw caution to the wind and eat every conceivable meal that we would normally pass on.    Cookies, cakes, fried turkey, sugar coated ham, the list is endless.  To top it off, we tell ourselves we don’t have time to exercise.

Why would you throw a year of hard work down the drain for eight weeks of culinary delights and “stress free” shopping?  And no, shopping is not going to count towards your exercise requirement.  The advice to “Park at the furthest parking space – you’ll burn more calories” is bad advice!  We live in Houston and thank you very much; I’m not inclined to become a target for a mugger.   Park as close as you can!

Let’s explore ways you can enjoy holiday delights guilt-free.

Maximize your fitness program.  Schedule a personal training session with me.   This isn’t just marketing on my part.  We can burn up to 500 calories in one hour and you will continue to burn calories at a faster rate when we finish the session.    Three session a week – and you will have burned one full day of calories.

Get some sleep!   This is a high stress time of year, you need to rest more than ever.  Rest and recovery are two of the most overlooked facets of our wellbeing and fitness regimen.  A minimum of seven hours is must.  Why not be wild and crazy, live on the edge and shoot for eight hours a night?

Choose what you eat cautiously.   Eat well before and after the holiday.  On the actual holiday you can splurge a little.  Eat white meat without the skin (skip the dark), skip the deep fried turkey and chose turkey that has been prepared in the oven, skip the ham if it is coated with sugar, and watch out for organ meats.

On side dishes allow yourself to sample what you want – just place a smaller amount on your plate.   Eat more salads and use low fat dressing.   Limit yourself to one piece of bread.

For desserts, if you cannot pass on the pie – eat half a piece.

Our goal is to not deprive ourselves totally, but use some restraint.

For the party animals.    Whatever you do, don’t  go to a party hungry.  Try to eat a healthy snack or even better, a healthy meal before.   If you drink alcohol, moderation is the key.  Some beers are lower in calories, as are certain wines.

This is just too much fun!  A typical Thanksgiving meal can average 3,000+ calories.  Add breakfast, lunch, snacking, a few drinks and you can add and additional 1000+ calories.
It is very easy to consume three day’s worth of calories on this one day alone.

Core Intervention wishes you and yours a joyous and blessed holiday season.  We also wish you good health!    We think the following offerings will help you get through the season a little healthier with your sanity intact.

Personal Training / Services Gift Certificate
Sold in $100.00 increments, this is the ultimate gift for family and friends to show you care.  I know first hand the benefits of working with a personal trainer.  It just makes sense.

How To Prepare A Healthy Holiday Meal
This private class will allow you one-on-one time with Barb to discuss holiday meal options, how to prepare healthier meals, recipe ideas and a trip to your grocery store of choice.  Similar to Shadow Shopping, but with a focus on meals we normally prepare during the holiday season.

Shadow Shopping
Need help and guidance navigating the grocery aisles?   Most people want to get in and out of the grocery store as quickly as possible, many times mindlessly purchasing products that aren't always the best choice.  Why invest hours of working out just to lose gains made in the gym because of your choice of food?   Learn how to read a nutrition label, compare products and more.   We will also show you our favorite foods that make you feel like you are cheating, but are really healthy options

This one-on-one class is recommended for anyone wanting to build muscle, reduce fat or lose weight.  50/50 time split in your home and your grocery store.

Upcoming Cookbook
I’m very pleased and excited to announce we will be releasing a healthy cookbook (as yet untitled) on December 1st.  “Three personal trainers share how, what and when they eat.  Recipes, tips and educational tools included.”  I have been working with Ray Bessette, CPT and Christine Boss, RPh, CPT to share our “secrets” with clients.  I will send out announcements closer to the release date.  To preorder, please send me an e-mail for more information.  Chris@CoreIntervention.com  This e-book will retail for $19.99.
